Student Placements

Many college students on work experience placements are welcomed every year from a variety of academic programs including, DSW, CYC, SSW, Behaviour Science and Behavioural Psychology. Students are matched with programs according to their area of interest.

Direct Support Professional - Summer Positions

Community Living Kingston and District hires many students as part-time Direct Support Professionals during the summer months.  The central job duty of the Direct Support Professional is to provide supports that allow people with intellectual disabilities to participate fully in the life of their community.

Summer positions may be available in a number of different programs:

  • Residential Services:  Between three and six adults with intellectual disabilities sharing a home.  Including persons served in the community is a key responsibility.  Supports also include activities of daily living (cooking, personal care, home maintenance).  Staff are guaranteed sixteen scheduled hours of work a week, with opportunity to work up to full-time hours.  Supports are offered 24 hours a day, and evening and weekend work is a requirement.  A driver’s license is a requirement.  Rate of pay is $19.29 per hour, plus 7.33% in lieu of vacation.  Contracts available from Victoria Day to Labour Day, though earlier start dates may be possible.  Anticipated Number of Vacancies:  6 
  • Camp Inclusion:  Providing support to children aged 6 to 12 to attend regular day camps with their non-disabled peers.  Thirty-hour a week position, typically weekdays during the day.  A driver’s license and a vehicle is required.  Rate of pay is $16 per hour, plus 4% in lieu of vacation.  Contracts available from early June to Labour Day.  This position is grant-dependent, with a maximum of two positions available.  Note:  These positions are also dependent on the course of the pandemic.
  • Youth Connect:  Providing support to young adults with intellectual disabilities (aged 16 to 21) to connect with their communities through employment, volunteerism or recreation.  Thirty hour a week position, with flexible hours (days, evenings, weekends) required.  A driver’s license and a vehicle is required.  Rate of pay is $16 per hour, plus 4% in lieu of vacation.  Contracts available from early June to Labour Day.  This position is grant-dependent, with a maximum of two positions available.  Note:  These positions are also dependent on the course of the pandemic.

Interviews for these positions will likely take place in mid-March, so interested parties should apply before March 5th.

Becoming a Student Placement

Students typically “job shadow” while on placement and are provided the opportunity to perform most of the same duties that regular staff members carry out.

Students receive a thorough orientation to the mission of the organization and provide direct support to people with disabilities in community based settings.
